MY REJECTIONS INSPIRE ME!

I've been sending out lots of queries to Publishers and Literary Agents who accept unsolicited queries for a few months now. Some of the rejections are sent with encouragement and constructive suggestions. These are few and in between. Other rejections are flat out, conveyor belt, you're not Stephen King, type rejections. Then there are the three months later I hope you're not still waiting for a response type rejections.

The ones I'm concerned with are the ones that come back with "thank you for your query but we feel this is not a good fit or something that we would want to represent or publish".

I used to feel a twinge of disappointment when I got these type rejections. I would sometimes begin to doubt the merits of my work.  Then I had a conversation with a published friend of mine who said "you already know this is a process to become published traditionally.  You have to be patient in finding a publisher who is willing to take on the type of writing you're doing. Some publishers shy away from books that are not political correct, controversial, or different from the mainstream publishing they're used to. Basically they don't have the balls and want to stick with the safe bets.  You have to continue to maintain your confidence in your work and be patient that your literary match made in heaven is coming".

I would have kissed him after hearing those words but I don't think his wife would have understood lol.

So now I have a new perspective on looking at rejections to the book and never again will I waiver in my belief that the world needs to read:

I decided to make the first eBook episode free because going forward I feel it is imperative that the reader become familiar with the main characters as they develop and evolve in sub-sequent episodes.

I felt a need to do this until the Big Book or main novel is published which breaks down all the characters and their personality conflicts in more detail.

Reflections

I was going through some old albums and I came across this pic. I recalled a time when I was walking downtown behind an elderly white couple.  The man kept looking back at me. When they got to the corner they crossed the street. I paid them no mind until I saw a homeless man start harassing them for money. I crossed the street and asked them if the man was bothering them. Now I guess they think they are being cornered by two homeless men.  Before they could answer I took out my shield from under my shirt and told the homeless man to "get the f*ck out of the area". He took off running. Before the couple could thank me I told them to "have a nice day" and crossed back over to my side of the street.  I'm sure that incident left an indelible impact on their thoughts about racial profiling.  

The same thing happened when I was off duty and helped a uniformed cop take down a perp. He thought he had to perps to deal with until I told him I was "on the job".  Oh what a relief it is.

Free Summer Read: Deep Inside New York's Drug World

"Miami Vice was a joke," said retired Undercover Narcotics Officer William King Grimball. "When I was undercover, I had to walk up to drug dealers and, in 30 seconds, convince them that they had known me forever."

Grimball--who recently retired after working 15 years as both an officer and Homicide Detective for the New York Police Department—is the author of the newly released crime novel UC630 Cop or Criminal (read a free sample). Grimball sat down with Wrightspeak to tell us about why decided to detail parts of his extensive undercover career in his new crime book.

"It took me a long time to write the book because [my experience] was so traumatic," he said. In all, he estimates that it took him ten years to write the book. The novel follows a young cop who loses parts of himself while trying to save New York City from the violent crack epidemic of the 1980s. The graphic novel provides a raw, behind-the-scenes take on the tumultuous decade and the toll that the crime wave took on the cops charged to stop it. Grimball takes readers through a journey where they see undercover officers in a new way—as close-knit family members.

"I didn't start [writing the book] until I heard that two undercover officers were shot and killed in Manhattan," Grimball said. "So I decided to write this book for people who are thinking about going into the police field. Most people don't know what they're getting in to.

"When you hear news about a meth lab or a crack house getting taken down, it all looks so sanitary. So much more goes on behind the scenes," he said, adding that he's witnessed everything imaginable during his time as an undercover agent, including drug abuse and child prostitution.

"I was the first cop to buy crack from the city [during sting operation "School Days"], and at one point I was reputed to be the number one undercover agent in the state," Grimball said. "Crack dealers were vicious—they would force feed women to get them hooked on crack just so that they could get them into prostitution." He admits that he sometimes still has nightmares about his undercover past. 

"I remember a time when there were so many [orphaned] babies that the city had to pay family members to take care of the children. There was also a time when cops had to sleep at the Central Booking Station because so many people were getting locked up. Some cops were making more than the Mayor with salaries exceeding $125,000 including overtime during those years."

Grimball says that his book is unique in that it details the ripple effect that street crime can have on the community.

"I want [people] to know how drugs impact people, government and society," he said. "Readers get the chance to see how far people will go to get drug dealers off the streets."

Who Would I Cast as UC630?

I've often thought about who would play me if a movie was made about UC630. A young Denzel would have been perfect but he screwed up and got old. Ice Tea? Can't stand his voice! Ice Cube is too chunky.

No the person to play UC630 has to be able to be a thug and an aristocrat at the same time.

Allen Payne

He is my first choice. I liked him in New Jack City and Tyler Perry's House of Payne.  A younger Will Smith could have done it as well.

Just a thought.

The Many Faces of UC630

When I talk to friends and family now, who have read one of my books, they wonder how I pulled off what I did when I was an Undercover. When I look back at some of the photos I've kept from that era in my life...I can see how. Now I would like you to see also. I plan to post more pics in the future. It's tedious digging up the photos, scanning and converting them, cropping, doing the HTML format bla bla. Unfortunately there are only 24 hours in a day and getting the eBooks finished for you takes precedence. So keep coming back and checking!

HOMELESS MAN ACT

This was the look I had when I was doing a ghost operation in Spanish Harlem. I was kicked in the butt by a drug dealer who thought I wasn't moving fast enough. Needless to say he paid for that kick dearly as noted in the book.

Not a very good angle but you can see how deep the tint was on that 1977 Cadillac Seville. I had all the bells and whistles in her. She was 6 years old when I bought her but my crazy Puerto Rican and Jamaican friends did some modifications on her for me. I was not mechanically inclined so I had no idea what they did to the 350 CID V-8 (5.7 Litres)engine. But one day, while testing a modification they did on the Bronx River Parkway I was being followed by a friend in a Corvette. He said I started to pull away at 120! After 3 minutes I had to pull into a gas station lol.

I Can Handle It! In all the years that I was undercover I can't tell you how many time I heard people say that. My cousin was weak minded, they had an addictive personality, or a pre- disposition.

About The Series

    UC630 "Cop or Criminal" The Series (based on a true story) is a collection of eBooks based on the main novel that chronicles the typical day of the fictional character Jamal "Animal" Hudson.

    Each episode shows what this Undercover did, should have done, and was accused of doing during his four years as a NYPD Narcotics Operative.  I must warn you, and this is not a sales pitch, but the information is graphic and the language is vulgar at times.  If you are sensitive to this type of raw reality then you should not read this book.

    But the reality is if you're going to participate in a dog fight you better have the bigger dog.

    I created the eBook series because my friends and family did not want to wait for the Publishers to have the story dangling for months or even years before THEY decided to publish it.

    Episode 1 is expected to be released towards the end of July 2013.  I will keep you guys up to-date when the next eBook in the series is available.
